El Corte Inglés has chosen Siemens as its technology provider to drive its sustainability strategy and achieve a 20% reduction in energy consumption and pollutant emissions across 20 of its centers.
Thanks to the Energy & Asset Performance Services Program, a cloud-based data analysis solution for the automatic detection of improvement opportunities in various equipment, the Spanish company has successfully reduced an average of 15% in air conditioning consumption. This represents over 6% of the total energy consumption in four pilot-phase centers. Following the initial success, El Corte Inglés has expanded the project to an additional 16 stores, aiming to reduce operational costs in HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems.
With this collaboration, El Corte Inglés takes a significant step towards energy efficiency and sustainability, showcasing its commitment to the environment and cost reduction. Siemens, in turn, solidifies its position as a leader in digital solutions and energy management, offering innovative and cost-effective solutions to help clients achieve their business and environmental goals.
15% less energy through data analysis solution
El Corte Inglés has achieved a significant milestone by finding an innovative solution to optimize its energy consumption. As part of its corporate strategy and commitment to best practices in environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) areas, the Spanish giant sought a way to reduce energy consumption without a significant investment.
To achieve this, Siemens, through its Smart Infrastructure division, implemented an energy management solution, including secure connectivity from different control systems (BMSs) in each center, cloud analytics for identifying improvement opportunities evaluated by specialists, and remote actions for correction and implementation of agreed-upon improvements.
After an initial pilot phase in four stores, achieving a 15% reduction in energy consumption in air conditioning systems, Siemens demonstrated the best results through a combination of digital services and extensive expertise in HVAC.
Savings lie in infrastructure digitalization
El Corte Inglés has Siemens' Building Management System (BMS) solution installed in approximately 45% of its shopping centers. The company has an annual electricity consumption of 1,200,000 MWh, with 45% coming from air conditioning systems.
Siemens' Energy & Asset Performance Services provides a smarter approach to facility optimization. By using data-driven maintenance management, issues can be predicted and resolved before becoming a real threat to the operation of a building's most expensive assets.
The solution is based on digitalization and comprehensive data analysis of installed assets and building performance, such as energy consumption or CO2 emissions, among others. This service helps improve efficiency, reduce downtime risk, optimize costs, and provide a productive and sustainable environment.
Following the initial phase, Siemens will help implement data-driven improvements for a total of 20 selected shopping centers, with the goal of reducing over 6% of HVAC operational costs. Siemens' team will implement operational improvements and apply best practices in HVAC maintenance.
El Corte Inglés strengthens its commitment to sustainability in Spain
Sustainability, consumption, and energy efficiency are key areas in El Corte Inglés' energy efficiency program launched in 2020.
Siemens' value proposition will address three main challenges that the client aims to tackle in the next year:
- Minimum 6% reduction in energy consumption per building
- Optimization of building maintenance
- Improvement of customer experience
Additionally, Siemens' business model allows for early implementation of relevant operational changes. This approach enables El Corte Inglés to maximize return on investment.
